Hey Leo,
what a great offer!

I was already thinking about your board… time is perfect!
Next Soundcheck is in preparation.
The Katana board is on the way and volumio’s ‘primo’ wants a competitor.
I’ll sent you the estimated date and shipping details with PM.
Kind regards, jens

Hello Judy,
i think that you cannot use this case for comibantion with Kali. Is it true?

Thank you for answer.

Fide

I am looking forward to your findings.

Hi fide.
definitely not. the kali dimension is also longer and wider.

so i use this one from allo instead:
allo.com/sparky/acrylic-cas … o-2-1.html
(mill acryl on top for capacitor)

ApplePi DAC and ApplePi Volume-Clocker, both shipped out today.

Here is a video to help with assembly.

  10. hopefully a CurryMan DAC ? (Ron!)
  11. yours?
  12. ?

You are welcome to join this event in hamburg for free .
for better planning, just write me a not binding registration to linux @ kompage.de
i will publish our result here one or two day after.

Thinking about 12 devices to compare? I will use a 8 line high end switch with IR from dodocus.de and my marantz amp does have 5 lines…

I am looking forward to the results of this sound check.

I would prefer you evaluate the ApplePi DAC using balanced output, this way you cannot use the switch, since it is only supports single ended.

Hi Leo, my amp does not have an option for balanced input.
i would use the balanced connection if i can rent a Marantz PM-10 or something similar. i ask my dealer next week.

Thank you.

no problem. but keep in mind, that much people only have RCA on amp. so your device could not 100% comparable for them in this test.

If you are only using RCA outputs on the rest of the DACs, then use the RCA outputs on mine.

I don’t know if the other DACs in your sound check have XLR outputs, but I am pretty sure at least a couple do.

Hi volumio friends,

september, 6 at 8pm in Hamburg, Germany we will hear a great I2S DAC competition.

  1. Katana v1.2
  2. Piano 2.1 with Kali reclocker
  3. Boss 1.2
  4. Mamboberry HD+ DAC with Crystek Clock and Kali reclocker
  5. Terraberry Dac 2
  6. Orchard Audio’s ApplePi DAC with Orchards Reclocker
  7. Volumio ‘Primo’ (ES9028Q2M)
  8. IQaudio DAC pro
  9. SABREberry DAC (ES9023)
  10. hopefully a CurryMan DAC
  11. DACBerry PRO

These are all great DAC boards - and everyone has it’s own advantages.
And remember, I am using this great 8 port switch.
So what I like to share here is my idea for a ‘VOLUMIO Soundcheck ON TOUR’
So, if you like to hear these DAC boards in your environment (Amp, Speaker, Room,…)
start a ‘come together’ invitation at your place and I will come
I already have a inquiry for Aachen, Germany.
( i would like to be payed for travel and accommodation)

Do you like the idea of ‘VOLUMIO Soundcheck ON TOUR’?
best j.

Dear music lovers,

a small update for you. allo confirmed me the shipping of the Katana board!
we are very excited to have these great top tier I2S boards in competition.

  1. Katana v1.2 (ESS SABRE 9038Q2M)
  2. Piano 2.1 (2x TI PCM5142) with Kali reclocker
  3. Boss 1.2 (TI PCM5122)
  4. Mamboberry HD+ DAC (ES9023) with Crystek Clock and Kali reclocker
  5. Terraberry Dac 2 (AKM AK4490)
  6. Orchard Audio’s ApplePi DAC (2x TI PCM1794A) with Orchards Reclocker
  7. Volumio ‘Primo’ (ES9028Q2M)
  8. IQaudio DAC pro (TI PCM5242)
  9. SABREberry DAC (ES9023)
  10. DACBerry PRO (TI PCM5242)

I’ve decided to use up to 3 allo power supplies for each device to get the best result.
(separate power supply for RPI and board if easily possible)

Hey guys, thank you for your interest in this soundcheck.
It was adventurous again. We had six listener. Since the visitors did not know volumio, I first showed them myvolumio.

Then it went to listen (again in the blind test - no one knew what is connected where.)

  1. Katana v1.2 (1 psu to RPI, 1 psu to the boards + earth connection)
  2. Piano 2.1 with Kali reclocker (dual mono & upsampling to 32bit, 1 psu to RPI, 1 psu to the kali)
  3. Boss 1.2 , (with 1 psu)
  4. Mamboberry HD+ DAC with Crystek Clock and Kali reclocker (with 1 psu to RPI, 1 psu to the kali)
  5. Terraberry Dac 2 (with 1 psu to RPI, 1 to the DAC)
  6. Orchard Audio’s ApplePi DAC with Orchards Reclocker( 1 PSU to RPI, one to reclocker , one to DAC)
  7. Volumio ‘Primo’ (1 psu)
  8. IQaudio DAC pro (one psu)
The DACBerry PRO did not come in time.
all played with volumio 2.452, the primo with 2.418 and special driver. always used the allo 5v3a psu. always the same cable.

The audience was enthusiastic about the sound and would not have expected it from these small devices.
All candidates played excellently! (my great collection  )
I asked them, if they liked one or the other board better the other.
They said that they especially liked the Apple Pi board and the Volumio ‘primo’ but also the piano combi.
The Apple Pi would have the most power was said by one guy.
All three where be particularly clear and detailed. One listener said that the piano was better for him in one song, in another song the applepi was better. The piano would have sometimes a bit more bass.

Since I was surprised that the Katana board was not mentioned, I asked if another DAC was particularly good. It was said that the boss was also very good.

I noticed during the preparation of the soundcheck , that the cable shield and the amplifier housing was short on voltage.
After consulting with Allo, I was told that I had the manually modified prototype of Katana 1.2, and apparently a capacitor was shorted. I will get a replacement soon.

Then we will continue the top tier contest in a few weeks

Remarkable, I find is, that even audiophile inexperienced music lovers, have heard a difference in the DAC!

Looking for a RPI Zero DAC board? see here : comparing-six-i2s-zero-boards-t8015.html

Thank you for doing and organizing the sound check.

Seem like the ApplePi DAC was towards the top of everybody’s list.

Shame the Katana had a problem, look forward to another soundcheck when a fully working sample is sent.
Congrats too Leo, great introduction.

… it does not get boring.

before having the Katana back in the Game, i can play with another new thing here:

i did get a DACBERRY ONE+ (many thanks oriol!) osaelectronics.com/product/ … -one-plus/
