Volumio 1.55 - System halts spontaneously

I am still troubleshooting this issue, but I thought people would like to know about a potential issue.

I have been running Volume 1.5 on a Raspberry Pi B+ and Hifiberry Digi+ with no real issues. The web page is slow but useable. The raspberry pi is powered of a USB 2.0 powered hub that provides 2A of current.

I upgraded yesterday to version 1.55 and replaced the B+ with a model 2. No issues initially. The speed increase is welcome. What I noticed is that the system will halt when idle. Unfortunately I haven’y been able to trap any of the error message. That is today’s job.

Has anyone else seen a similar problem?

cheers,

rob…

More info on the problem. I setup a ssh connection and let the following command run:

volumio@volumio:~$ sudo cat /proc/kmsg

When I got back from lunch, the following output was on the screen. (see attached file). It appears from first glance that the system is rebooting. However, the uptime command does not appear to reset the uptime parameter. The system shows that it has been up since 10pm last night.

volumio@volumio:~$ uptime
20:06:36 up 17:58, 3 users, load average: 0.02, 0.04, 0.05

If I believe the uptime the system never reboots. However, the screen output appears to say the contrary. Does anyone have some insight into this?

cheers…

It appears that this system does not like RTF tagged files. Here is the output of the debug file:

Well, after a couple of days of soaking the system, I can definitely say that the system is not rebooting. Also, I have been unable to duplicate the boot output to the ssh log. That may have been a one time fluke.

The problem appears to be that the system drops off the network from time to time. You will be unable to communicate with it and then after a bit of time, everything will come back.

I have re-installed the digi+ on a raspberry pi b+ so that I can get back to listening to my music. I will setup a test system on my old hdmi monitor. Hopefully, I can use it to run some tests to see if I can duplicate the problem.

The rasperry pi model 2 definitely has the speed and memory to make an excellent music player. It probably needs a few o/s updates to make it more consistent.

cheers…

Hi…

Me too! Can’t yet get a handle on the problem. Seems likely 3.18.5 kernel issue, my guess. I do not yet have proof.
System:
Raspberry pi2 model B
IQAudio Pi-Dac+
Edimax ew-7811un

Sometimes it is impossible to ssh into the pi, but Airplay works when I can’t ping the pi. No understanding yet!

Workng…

I am making some progress on this.

The interface file contains the following for wlan0:
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wireless-power off
wpa-ssid Second Network
wpa-psk xxxxxxxxxx

Manually bringing the interface up gives the following message:
sudo ifup wlan0
Error for wireless request “Set Power Management” (8B2C) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not permitted.
ioctl[SIOCSIWAP]: Operation not permitted
ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument
ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument

So I am assuming that usb power management can’t be set for this particular wifi dongle (Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN Adapter).

My current assumption is that usb power management is on and that the system is powering down the adapter when it appears to be not in use, i.e. when the player is idle.

Next, I am going to look at two approaches:

#1) find a workaround to trick the system into thinking that the interface is active. Maybe sending a PING to the router once a minute can force the network interface to stay up.

#2) Find a way of turning power management off at the kernel level for the entire usb system. There are some clues on the net, but I am unable to verify that I have turned of power management.

A couple more days of testing should close off my problem.

cheers…

Hi…
Many of the WiFi dongles using the Realtek 8192cu driver for the Raspberry Pi have the power saving mode turned on by default, which causes dropped connections.

Solution:

Create a new configuration file: sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/8192cu.conf
Add the following line inside the 8192cu.conf file:

options 8192cu rtw_power_mgnt=0 rtw_enusbss=0

Reboot your Raspberry Pi

Once rebooted, the WiFi connection will be stable. No additional work is needed.

Note: Many WiFi dongles do not respond to turning off wireless power management from /etc/network/interfaces file by inserting the line wireless-power off. It does nothing for the low cost WiFi dongles. Even though iwconfig will report Power Management: off it is not true. The problem is with the Realtek8192cu driver.
