Volumio + XBMC. An audiophile media-center

Could you please write a new thread with the exact instructions, including command lines?
Even if it may seem obvious, it would help the people just trying to reproduce it.
Once you start the new thread (title: “[GUIDE] Install xbmc on Volumio”) I will mark it to be more visible.
Thanks

Hi!

I followed this guide to setup a Kodi media on top of Volumio. It works like charm . Thanks !.

If it helps, I found a hardware solution to high drain of CPU%: a simple push button and a python script listening to it. If kodi is running, it kills it, if not, it launches it. A green LED lites when Kodi is running.
Simple, yet effective.

Is there an actual guide, how to install a KODI to a VOLUMIO?

I think the new Raspberry 2 should have no problems to run both in the same time, because he was twice RAM and much more CPU-Power.

Hello,

i have bought a Hummingboard and i would like to install Volumio with KODI.
So i join last post to know where a full guide can be found to install proper both?
Is a solution found to lower CPU when KODI is idle?

Thanks
Fabien

Hi,
there are so many discussions on that topic, but i cant see any proper HOWTO.

Is it possible to run the latest volumio 2 + KODI on one raps pi 2 device using HiFiBerry DAC+?

Is it possible that 2 apps will share poperly HifiBeryDAC?

I think its full waste of all the resources to run only one app on Rasp device (power, enviro, maintenance, etc etc… )

Thanks for ideas.

Hi,

I successfully installed KODi on top of volumio.
MPD use Hifiberry Digi+ output, while kodi use hdmi.

Now I’d like to build a custom kodi (with some patch as boost center channel one), so I figure I have to search for cross-compilation guides…
Maybe build a new kernel, optimized for RPI2 (as volumio seems to be compiled for bcm2708)

Hello,

may we have a how-to guide? Thanks

libnfs4 has to be installed in order to access nfs ressources.

adding a symbolic link between v1 and v4 is mandatory too

ln -sf libnfs.so.4 libnfs.so.1

I am totally converted by the jitterless DAC+ pro audio.

I too want to know how I can use the HDMI port with KODI but keeping the audio from the DAC+ pro (using Volumio preferably).

Hello Clever People!

I have spent 1 whole week trying to install KODI on top of VOLUMIO on RSP2 and failed :frowning:

 • When using ssh command sudo apt-get install kodi I get the error message E: Unable to locate package kodi

Like so many others I simply want Volumio to output sound over audio jack and or DAC, and for KODI to output video and sound only over HDMI.

If I can get this working like so many others have I will be in media bliss and not feel like I waisted my time and money buying the RSP2.

Please can someone send me a copy of their image or tell me how to get this working. There was an image kindly posted earlier in the year but the link is dead.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Everybody,

@Volumiouser:
I don’t remember exactly what i’ve done (step by step), but i’ve been able to install Kodi on top of Volumio 1.55.
I followed this: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=109088
and this: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=99866

Both Volumio and Kodi can use my I2S DAC (Durio Sound Pro), but the latter could use HDMI if you prefer

Hello Youpilai !

Thank you for your reply. I did try one of those links before but not the other. Finally it is working!!

Perhaps you can help me once more but for the audio output.

I want to have Volumio audio output over headphone jack only, and XBMC audio over hdmi only so that both can be used at the same time without mixing together.

I have read that audio goes via hdmi by default if a display is plugged in and this can be forced to go via headphone jack, … but that will affect XBMC also which defeats the purpose of using Volumio and XBMC simultaneously.

I have come so far … please please i need a solution!!

Thank you

Hi Volumiouser,

I’m not a specialist and i don’t know if what you wan’t is possible (2 outputs at the same time), but i’ll try to fix/attach the outputs of both MPD and Kodi, each one to a different hardware output, in their own conf files (or via GUI)

My case was to use my extra sound card (I2S DAC) for both (not concurrently), but before i achieved this, MPD only was using it while Kodi used HDMI. In this configuration, perhaps the Rpi can send 2 differents streams to 2 differents outputs.

But it may be possible only because my config has an extra sound card…

Hello and thanks again for your reply. It is much appreciated.

From what I now understand the Pi can only output one sound at a time on its own. So it looks like I will have to buy a I2S DAC adapter to achieve my goal, which is not so bad considering I have found the headphone jack to be of poor sound quality.

The problem is the hi-fi berry cost nearly as much as the Pi itself. Ebay has others ranging from 10euro upwards but I don’t know if they will work the same. I don’t want a usb adapter because it will use up ethernet bandwidth etc.

Can you recommend a cheap, good I2S DAC adapter for Pi 2?

Looking forward to yours or anyones help

Hello,

First, i’m not sure that having a I2S card allows to output concurrently two streams. If you’re not in a rush, i could test on mine, but not before next week.

As for a cheap I2S DAC, i can’t tell. For what i’ve read here, most people have one of Hi-Fi Berry’s, and seems to be quite happy with it.
It seems to me that about 22.90$ (DAC+ Light) or 29.90$ (DAC+ Standard) to drastically improve the sound of your Pi is not a bad move, but it’s just my opinion. It’s nearly plug and play, they sell adapted case (9.90$) for if if you want one, and widely supported (like Volumio) as one of the most common harware.
I’ve no doubt you can found a cheaper DAC, but ask yourself if the 15-20$ difference really worth the pain you’ll have to make it working.

I personnally spend much more money (and time spent to configure/adapt it!) for my setup, counting the Durio Pro card, the case i’ve had to adapt, and a good power supply, and i’m still thinking this is a great deal for the results.

Once more I appreciate your reply

I would like to wait an see if you are able to output Volumio sound over I2S card and at the same time XBMC sound (and video) over HDMI.

Please let me know your test result. From what I have read this will work but a real life test is better to know.

Also, I agree it is probably better to use the suggested card to give me the least headache :exclamation:

Thank you again

Yep, can confirm that you can have xbmc with hdmi and at the same time i2s with volumio. This was my setup on a PI before I sold them. Also tried the same with osmc and volumio, no Problem.

Cheers for that.
At the risk of being pedantic can you confirm you were able to play both at the same time?
Also, how did you get volumio and osmc to work together. That would be amazing . I can only get kodi on top of volumio.
Thanks in advance

Sorry, I don’t have the build scripts anymore, otherwise i would have sent them.
In both cases, I used the Kodi/ OSMC images as base and configured Volumio on top.
Whether Kodi and Volumio worked parallel? I did not test, otherwise I would have remembered.
Honestly? Raspberries would probably not be not powerful enough, not even the PI 2

Hi and thanks for looking.

So far I have built Kodi on top of Volumio as per others advice and because it was relatively easy to do (2 weeks or trail and error …lol). What I really wanted was to put Volumio on top of Kodi as you achieved. Can you give me some direction of how to do this. It is what I really want to achieve but I am fairly new to linux so the more info you can give the better.

Thanks in advance again !
