Volumio 3 Buster Beta for X86

Hi,

just flashed a fresh Volumiobuster-3.053-2021-03-06-x86_amd64.img on a stick.

After 1st boot, headphones (analog out) are the default. I left it unchanged.
:white_check_mark:local UI and WEB UI are working fine
:x: There’s no startup sound,
:x: There is no playback of TIDAL
:x: there is no playback of webradio

Here is the log after 1st boot: http://logs.volumio.org/volumiobuster/OsAIZO6.html

After a second boot:
:white_check_mark:there is the startup sound on the analog out (and on SPDIF)
:x: local UI shows the known error message:

:white_check_mark: there is playback on analog out (and on SPDIF)
:x: despite analog out is configured as output, SPDIF is also active.

Log after second boot: http://logs.volumio.org/volumiobuster/1hHI6TW.html

Cheers, Robert

Hi,

just manually flashed the Volumiobuster-3.053-2021-03-06-x86_amd64.img on the internal SSD.

http://logs.volumio.org/volumiobuster/PBsJJLH.html

And - surprise, surprise, after the first boot everything works fine!!! :astonished: strange.

I did not hear the startup sound but playback works.
The parallelly active SPDIF to the configures analog out is also seen here.

AH! I found something interesting: As long as you leave the output settings unchanged at first boot (set to analog out) everything is fine. If you change the output device to something else (in my case: SPDIF or HDMI) there is no tostmessage"successfully restarted player" and after that you cannot start any playback. That error remains also after reboot!

Next finding: As long as the local UI hangs in this error (“The profile appears to be busy…”, see screenshot above) you are not able to playback anything. When you check “unlock profile and relaunch” on the local ui everything works!

One more finding: If you disable local UI via HDMI no playback is working. After waiting 2 or 3 minutes, playback starts.

Cheers,Robert

yeah, something seems slightly off. just connected monitor to device to see boot up messages. this comes up twice during boot:

lsblk: /dev/sd[a-z]: not a block device
sh: usb: unknown operand
lsblk: /dev/sd[a-z]: not a block device
sh: usb: unknown operand

and then after 3 to 4 seconds same message comes up again. and then it starts up properly. but the whole boot up process takes around 95 seconds.

here is log after boot up

http://logs.volumio.org/volumiobuster/0cgXS3W.html

on output devices i can only use USB Audio CODEC. others don’t work. available choices are:
headphone jack
usb audio codec
hdmi 0
hdmi 1
hdmi 2

system feels sluggish and sometimes needs 5 to 10 seconds to respond especially when switching between audio sources.

regards

The error message is something I still need to fix, it only occurs when booting from eMMC (or NVMe) but is harmless.
I can’t confirm (yet) that the system is sluggish, but when you say especially after switching output then it looks like we have an (alsa?) reconfiguration issue. I have a suspicion that this is causing us other problems as well

I’m not sure if we can change/correct this SPDIF behavior, as we do not have full control over output routing. Volumio selects a device for output but I do not believe it specifically mutes others.

That’s definitely the case. Every time I switch the output there is no green toastmessage. It takes about 2 minutes until I can start a playback again after switching output. It seems to be a similar (the same?) behaviour like we saw after the first boot of a freshly flashed stick.

Building up the local music library takes many hours now and I still see no progress…

I now switched off the local UI via HDMI and went through a cycle “power off” and “start” - now playback is working again…
local music lib is also there…

Are there any connections / dependencies between ALSA and local UI via HDMI ?

I also think so. I tried to reboot the system after output device and mixer setting change and in this case the playback works fine.

I just noticed another issue on 3.053

When i add a few songs to play and then the playback starts. After some time i pause the playback. There are few more songs left in queue.

Then i restart volumio. After the restart, the playback position is reset to the first songs in the list.
Have any of you seen this behavior.

I can confirm the output device switch issue.
Clicking around too much while waiting for the toast message even locks up my front end completely, only a hard reboot helps.

Found the issue, re-added VIRTIO_NET for the next release

Hi,
finally I found a way to reproduce the crucial error that playback is not operating any more. Here is what I did:

  1. Volumiobuster-3.053-2021-03-06-x86_amd64.img on an x86 PC installed on the internal SSD.
  2. perform a “factory reset”
  3. allow “test mode” and “ssh” on the volumio.local/dev page
  4. login over ssh
  5. plug in an external HD with the music files
  6. copy the files to the SSD
    cd /data/INTERNAL
    cp -R /media/MUSIC/* .
  7. on the UI start an “update” of the music library (the copy process is still ongoing)
  8. change the output from SPDIF to HDMI and back
  9. login to TIDAL
  10. try to playback something (webradio or TIDAL)
  11. :x: The playback will show the green toasmessage in the upper right corner of the UI
  12. :x: The playback won’t start.
  13. :x: The button in the middle of the control pannes still shows the “START” icon instead of “PAUSE”.

Now the system is in kind of a deadlock.

  • UI is working (local and web), Tidal login and TIDAL title search is working.
  • :x: Change of output is no longer working (no toastmessage “successfully restarted player”)
  • :x: Playback is not working
  • :x: Building the local music lib is shown as “in progress” with the rotating arrows but there is no progress in the lib itself.
  • :x: :x: :x: The MPD has given up (smx systemd[1]: mpd.service: Start operation timed out. Terminating.) - see the last line of the following output:

Hope it helps to solve this issue.
Tell me if you need more information.

Cheers,
Robert

To make a long story short:

  • plug in a USB Stick with at least some audio files (30 pcs. in my case)
  • perform a factory reset of the volumio system
=> the system will end up in this crucial state where no playback is possible.
Tested several times with 3.046 and 3.053

This happens when Chromium detects a hostname and profile mismatch.
A mismatch occurs each time you boot after the Player Name (hostname) has been changed in the System Menu.
It is a general Chromium issue which gets a simple fix in a next version.

3.054 has definitely sped my system up. There are still a few quirks. When i scan for new devices in source none of my nas appear. I can add them manually no problem. Library also adds a lot faster now. When i make any changes in playback options it still takes quite some time before playback resumes - and only if you skip to next track.

Latest log report on 3.054:

http://logs.volumio.org/volumiobuster/AbFtWsm.html

This extra version is only for people wishing to test the fixed InstallToDisk feature for x86.
There were some issues, causing it to abort in previous versions.

Be warned, doing this is still at your own risk.
You will be asked, before copying to the target disk, whether to go ahead with it.
It will overwrite the chosen disk target, with no way to recover, when you choose to do so.
But rest assured, we would never put it out here if it had not been tested on a number of configurations as well as we could.

This is version Volumiobuster-3.055-2021-03-12-x86_amd64
Use with care.

Hi gkkpch,

thanks für the new beta version: Volumiobuster-3.055-2021-03-12-x86_amd64.img

the first startup from a USB stick went fine (without any medium / audio files attached).
Here’s the log:
http://logs.volumio.org/volumiobuster/h45Vc88.html

Startup after factory reset with a USB medium containing some audio files attached ends up in the known issue where MPD is not starting and playback doesn’t work. This is what we expected because the issue is not yet solved in this version.

Log of start after factory reset and with audio files attached:

Install to disk is now fast as lightning! :zap: awesome !

Have a nice weekend!
Robert

Flashed 3.055. Would not reboot after install. Hard reset. Silly start up messages still appear (I know it’s bengin but still annoying) Still cant scan network attached devices when you go add devices. Message No Network Drives Found. But when you enter ip etc no problem mounting. Music library of roughly 600 gigs takes just under an hour to load initially. Headphone out still not working. Failed to open alsa etc etc Invalid argument

Regards

See my last post, there is nothing new except a working installtodisk.

The initial lsblk messages are still there, did not have the time yet to remove them, they are cosmetic and not an error. Just an indication that you are booting from emmc flash with no usb stick/drive attached.

With a next version we hope to fix the initial boot issues, it appears to be a little more complicated than we thought.

Btw., did you try resampling to 16bit before you tested headphones?
