Volumio 3 Beta: x86 with kernel 6.1 & latest firmware

Yeah, stupid me. Forgot to put device in test mode.
Kernel is now updated to V6.1.4-Volumio.

Thanks for the hard work!!!

Hi them all,

just testet successfully Volumiobuster-3.423-2023-01-11-x86_amd64 with my hardware (plus an EDIMAX USB WIFI Adapter that works as well).

The HDMI Screen (UI) gets completely white at the first boot and is therefore not useable.
LAN and WLAN connection is working well. Playback via SPDIF is working well.

Iā€™m not sure if I should try an OTAā€¦ Is it surely just updating the USB stick? Not my internal drive?

OTA Update worked fine. Even the UI (via HDMI) is responding now.

Log from the 3,425

Cheers,
Robert

If you would do a first boot from a flashed 3.425, then you would notice that the white screen issues has also been resolved. It was a known timing issue between starting the X display manager and the Chrome browser.

You should also have noticed that startup now shows a few extra messages to signal progress (something you asked for a few times).

Just an update: touchscreen is still causing issues.
Somewhere between kernel 5.10.y and 6.1.y there were some vital changes to touchscreen driver handling (kernel 5.12 in particular).
Some of the touch issues I could fix, but some touchscreens still wonā€™t work.
Therefore I canā€™t release the new kernel until the reason is known and fixes are applied.

Just to confirm (or give some additional info), I rolled back to kernel v5.1 and the touchscreen is still working.

yes, 5.10 was ok, wish the buggers had not touched it (pardon the pun).

You fix it, Iā€™ll test it

Hi GĆ©,

sorry to say that I cannot confirm that. In my case the white screen after first boot (3.425) is still remainingā€¦ Hereā€™s a log of that:

http://logs.volumio.org/volumiobuster/EaADJlP.html

Thatā€™s right - especially the [init] message about resizing the data partition (which can take quite a long time) is very helpful for less experienced Volumio users. Thanks for adding them to the startup procedure!

Cheers,
Robert

Iā€™ll check the white screen issue, perhaps I forgot to insert the fix in the beta build.

The fix did not make it into the volumiobuster beta version, it wonā€™t get picked up until my changes get merged with the official x86 version, sorry about that.

On a positive note, feedback has been good so far.
The touchscreen issues may be limited to specific models, but it is still WIP.

works on intel nuci3 with Teac-301x Tested wifi. Works fine too. I could not find any problems.

The touchscreen issue appears to be a kernel regression since 5.16.
I submitted a bug report to bugzilla.kernel.org

@Federicob in case you have time to test this version (see the OP) I can hopefully tick your open ā€œBroadcom chip versionā€ report as ā€œsolvedā€

@Wheaten
Hi Marco, would you mind moving the last few posts (covering the acer laptop) please? Itā€™s ok-ish here, but after the beta this thread is dead so it is better to have it documented as an audio issue in the general x86 thread.
Thanks!

Yep, moved it.

Update on the beta: the touchscreen issue is not moving at all. So far it has only been tied to one partical screen.

Weā€™ll give it a few more weeks and then decide to release or continue to wait for a fix.
Letā€™s see what happens when Linus decides that 6.1 is LTS. Then more reports may arrive because greater numbers of people will upgrade from 5.10 LTS or 5.15 LTS to 6.1 LTS.
The problem only started with 5.16!

yeah, I can wait. For me itā€™s nice to have, not mandatory :+1:

same here - ready to test something new when itā€™s available. :slightly_smiling_face:
