Too many issues with Volumio 3

Hi G-rig.
Thanks for your input so far.
I think that what I am going to do is to build a new music player and once that is done I will donate my current one to my daughter. I notice that you use usb out for sound. Iā€™m not sure that that gives the same quality as I2S via a hat. I think Iā€™ll start a new subject on that one.

All good mate, new projects and tinkering is always fun. Depends if you can hear a difference, I donā€™t have an allo Digi one or any of that stuff but still interests me. Digital is digital and my ADI 2 can process it fine, as can most DACs

I think itā€™s all a matter of individual taste using the USB versus hat. Iā€™m sure that you are right. I need to have a look at a few USB Dacā€™s and compare. Would you have any thoughts on an amp to be fed from the DAC. The thing is, I will be building a player which will be ā€˜all in one boxā€™ so I would need something sort of ā€˜chassis styleā€™. My current one is all in one unit, which of course was easier using a DAC/Amp combo hat.

Yeah, if you talk to HAT manufactures, a hat is the way to go, talking to the USB DAC manufactures, they will say USB is the way to go. Both have their pros and cons.

It all comes down to your personal taste and how you want to use your DAC. I am pretty on board with digital is digital, but I can make my NAD DAC sound like shit, using a bad PSU to feed my SBC.

I go along with what you say. I think as time is on my side Iā€™ll do a bit of research before I do anything. Thanks for you help.
I often wonder how much money can be justified in building a system because -
A - About half of my music collection is in MP3 format
B - Iā€™m 72 years old and my hearing 'aint what it used to be.

Itā€™s what you want to spend on it. If I budget 100 euro, i will most likely spend 150 euro.
If my hearing is getting less sensitive, I would stick with a very basic DAC, that at least can cover my range of hearing. If my range sticks between 70Hz and 14kHz, it wouldnā€™t make much sense to spend 500 euro to go up to 20kHz, which I canā€™t hear. And use the DSP plugin to power up the lowest and highest frequencies a bit.
choices, choices, choices.

Ok. Iā€™m with you on all that you say.
The thing with my hearing is a bit complicated. Although I can just about hear the whole normal range, I have a severe dip which centre on about14KHz and gives me a partial loss starting at about 11 and running through to 20 at which point I hear nothing. I donā€™t know what happens in other countries but here in France, When a hearing test is done we are given a result chart in the form of a graph to take along to a hearing aid specialist. With a decent graphic equalizer I could set it up to a reverse curve of my hearing loss and to a certain extent, balance my hearing.
Is the DSP plugin available in the plugins list in Volumio2?

Nope,
@balbuze and Volumio are almost done to deliver the FusioDSP plugin for V3. With the equalizers you can pretty much mimic the inverted graph. But Yes, you need V3 for it

Hi Wheaton.
Many thanks for the info. I followed the link that you gave me and as you said, the FusioDSP plugin is almost there. I expect it will be a while before I migrate to V3 so hopefully It will be ready to run by then.
I have been testing several of my music tracks on AUDACITY using the graphics equalizer in the software and mimicking my hearing loss curve (inverted). The results were very good.

Thanks for you help.

youā€™re welcome.

Agree mate, simplicity is good for sure. Not sure what to suggest as I got active Yamaha monitors so donā€™t need to worry about and amp. Matching gear for passive speakers is a bit harder. John Darko Audio (on YouTube is a good place to search for gear etc). Itā€™s Also good how he is 60% about the music enjoyment and 40% about the gear/Tech

Thanks for the info. Maybe I will look at active speakers for my new setup. In the meantime Iā€™ll take a look at John Darko.

OOPS! MY SILLY MISTAKE.
I know weā€™ve wandered off topic a bit, but I began this one with talking about my problems with not being able to get Volumio3 to install/run on my hardware. Anyway, I have now installed it and got it running. The issue was caused because had downloaded the wrong version in the first place - download for Windows and not download for Pi. How silly is that! Anyway, up and running now. Thanks for your help and sorry for wasting your time on this issue.
I have some odd issues with V3 but will start a new topic.

Thanks again all.

It was driving me crazy, unwanted disconnects, no library, unresponsiveness, reinstalls needed, no fun whatsoever. I was ready for other software. Worst release ever this v3. Decided one last try a week ago, latest version seems stable, but itā€™s my last try. I came from payed v2. Now free v3. Raspberry Pi zero with AlloBoss DAC top hat.

My 2 cents : pi zero is really not optimal for volumio.
It works, but itā€™s slow and limited by wireless connectivity.
If you can, get a pi 4. Itā€™s night and day compared to pi zero and you will have a flawless experience with volumio.

Your post gave me the idea of writing a simple 10 points guide on how to get the best of Volumio:
https://community.volumio.com/t/10-tips-to-get-the-best-of-volumio-and-avoid-issues/54964/3

Nice! But it should just work without extra effort?
And Pi zero no longer a good option :disappointed:

I think we went off topic a bit. I donā€™t have a Pi Zero. I use a Pi 3B - have done on V2 for a few years now. Itā€™s issues with V3 that I have.

Canā€™t connect USB DAC on ESS ES9068AS chip. Volumio 3 on RPi4b. Please tell me or give a link where there is a description

if you want to save some money, have a small device and obtain decent performance with Volumio, I can recommend the RPi0-2, the new model with quad-core processor

the original RPi0 with single-core processor is a bottleneck for a good Volumio experience, it is really on the edge.

Another trick is to use a original SD-card from the most known brands, at least class10 (even better if Class A1). A crappy SD-card can be another bottleneck for a good Volumio experience
