Is there a way for a Wi-Fi device ( tablet, smartphone, pc) to access my wireless Pi and control it without going through
a wireless network router? I am setting up a system for my auto and I would like to keep it as simple as possible.

You need to set up an ‘ad hoc’ network between the two… Here’s a thread about it on the pi forums.
