OTA update won’t work on my rPi 3B on Volumio 3

Hello everyone,

I got a problem with my upgraded version of Volumio on my raspberry Pi 3B. I upgraded from Volumio 2 to Volumio 3(.175). Since the upgrade I can’t do any OTA updates. There is always the message “please wait” and then nothing happened. I tried an optional DNS server but that won’t fix the problem. My rPi is connected through an internet cable. I hope someone can help me on this. I think it’s a bug.
Thank you in advance.

Eldin.

Hi Eldin. That’s odd. When you upgraded from v2 was it an OTA or a fresh install? I had various network issues until I did a reflash on the SD card. Might help to send system logs Sending logs for troubleshooting - Volumio Documentation

i would try switching off all the plugins and try again… it worked for a other update problem.

Hello Simon,

Thankyou for your answer. First I tried the OTA update but that didn’t worked quite good so I did a fresh installation. I tried to make a sys log. I hope I did it right, this is what came out:

Does your current Volumio version function ok, apart from the inability to OTA update? If so, it would be useful for the devs to get a complete system log after you have tried to initiate an update. So, reboot and try to OTA update, and then follow the details in the following link (as already givem by @SimonE) to get a system log. (Your log above is not complete)

Would you share some system logs please?

A quick fix would probably be a reflash of the latest version, but that doesn’t help in catching the cause of your initial problem.

I have a similar issue - may be related. I sometimes experience, that Volumio 3 on a RPi 3 just hangs (UI is not reachable via Browser). When I log into it using SSH and issue a journalctl -f, I see a “Successful connection” message every 15 seconds, but nothing else happens (UI not reachable). Sometimes, it just stopped after some minutes - today it is persistent.
I can sometimes make it go away, by issuing a volumio vrestart but today, that does not help.
Today, the restart makes the UI reachable again for a short time, but then, it hangs again with the same symptom.
Below I captured the last appearance from the point where I connect via Safari from my Mac to the point where it starts to hang. Hope it helps to get an idea.
Yesterday, the same system worked just fine for the whole evening.
(while I wrote this message, the final line kept repeating for more than 10 minutes, with an interval of 15s.

If you can ssh into the pi, try running an update this way and reporting what it returns…

below is what I did just now (with the update progress truncated)

Hello Dresdner353,

I used the SSH line and nothing happend. It says”checking for new updates” and then nothing. Is there something else I can try? Otherwise there’s no other option then reinstall Volumio.

When you say “and then nothing”… does it appear to hang there or does the “volumio@volumio:” prompt appear immediately?

I’m trying to determine if this is hanging or not finding an update.

For example, I ssh’d into mine now and ran the command… it returned in a few seconds saying no update available and clearly that command has exited as I can see the prompt.

volumio@volumio:~$ volumio updater forceupdate

Hello everyone,

I reininstalled Volumio on my Rpi and I found the problem. When I choose for a static IP i didn’t configure the gateway on a correct way, so Volumio didn’t come to the internet. Now the OTA update works. Thankyou all for helping me!

Glad to hear that.

I think we shall add a Diagnostic Menu to allow troubleshooting of problems

I have the same problem. I recently changed from rPi3 to volumio primo. Upgrade from version 2 to 3 and made some updates but now it just tells please wait.

No plugins installed. Fixed IP by DHCP-server (volumio set to receive) wired LAN.

Read this thread and thought I should give it a try by SSH but immediately receives connection refused. Tried both from PC with putty and android with juiceSSH. (Error 1005 no route to host)

I do reach my music at NAS at same network and does see available plugins, haven’t tried to install.

I’m at version 3.233. Want a update to get my touchscreen work, one of primary reasons to move from rPi to primo…

Just found this thread, I’ll continue reading:

I’ve searched before without match.

In the same thread that you found there is this info, click the link to book a time slot and Volumio support will help you online to fix the problem.
(install Putty on your computer beforehand, the it can be fixed very fast). My Primo was sorted in a few minutes.
