No sound out of HiFi Berry DAC + with Volumio2 (2.799)

Thanks a lot!
I confirm this fix works. Raspberry Pi 3 A+ w Hifiberry AMP2 + DPI screen. Volume mixer works even after reboot.

Same issue on update to 2.799 here are the logs

I tried the edit to mpd.conf suggested here, with reboot. no change.

Could you also try without modifying mpd.conf but with removing snd-bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=0 from and adding snd_bcm2835.enable_headphones=1 to /boot/cmdline.txt?

gvolt - I’ve made the change to /boot/cmdline.txt and returned mpd.conf to its original state.

still no luck

I can repost logs and output if that would help

Yes, please!

do you have the chance of flashing latest image on a SD-card, changing cmdline.txt before first boot?

Guys, thanks for the troubleshooting effort!

From what I see from your logs, we have 2 problems as of now:

  1. Plugins such as equalizer and parametric eq do not get updated with the latest change (sharberger can you confirm the plugins you have installed? )
  2. On some configurations (PI0 with DSI screen, the audio jack is initialized.

I am doing another test build as of now (which adds snd_bcm2835.enable_headphones=1 ) as proposed by Darmur.

NOTE: We cannot remove compat salsa, since this work is required to prepare support for upcoming kernel 5.4

Please test and let us know, important: write also the plugins you have installed. In case you have equalizer and parametric eq, disable and enable them and save their configuration again.

original configuration has compat_alsa disabled (bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=0)

do you mean this setting is required or the opposite (bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=1)?

Please let me know, I can easily test both options together with snd_bcm2835.enable_headphones=1

Yes sorry I meant that.

Build is in progress  Please test it and report back

thanks a lot for your contributions!

EDIT: it looks like a power cycle is required! Doing that I have correct configuration! even with bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=0

with DSI touchscreen and snd_bcm2835.enable_headphones=1 snd-bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=0

I fixed the problem by editing the /etc/mpd.conf file according findings Darmur. Both the Spotify plugin’s don’t work (Spotify version 2.2.2 and Volumio Spotify Connect2 version 1.0.3), no sound on output of the Hifiberry DAC 2 HD audio board. Also installed Radio Paradise plugin version 1.1.3 and works.

It wasn’t me who suggested to edit /etc/mpd.conf, I don’t recommend that at all

Better to edit /boot/cmdline.txt adding snd_bcm2835.enable_headphones=1, don’t forget to power-cycle after that

@Darmur
You also seem to have a Hifiberry Amp2?
Did you manage to enable the hardware volume mixer with the suggested cmdline.txt?

I was not able to set it up with snd_bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=0.

I don’t have that board, but the trick should work with any I2S DAC/AMP

The issue was caused by a “wrong” alsa configuration caused by the new kernel while Volumio was still referring to the old good one.

If your Hifiberry Amp2 will be mapped as card2 you should have back your HW volume mixer

For some reason I only have working volume controls with

remove snd-bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=0
add snd_bcm2835.enable_headphones=1

when having both lines in the cmdline.txt I can’t change volume and after a reboot / powercycle the hardware mixer disappears and it says “undefined” in the mixer tab. I can’t set it to “hardware” as only “software” or “none” are available in the drop down menu.

Can I change the cmdline.txt with sudo nano and then power cycle? Or do I have to prepare a clean image everytime?

you can do that, this is the way I’m testing those changes.

Please try to post here the log of aplay -l and to apply again playback settings in Volumio, after applying the fix

Sorry, it was Panos70 that suggested to edit the /etc/etc/mpd.conf file!

I got it working using snd-bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=1 + snd_bcm2835.enable_headphones=1

EDIT: But as I understand the line snd-bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=0 has to remain in the cmdline.txt? Or does it not matter whether the value is 0 or 1

you can set the variable snd-bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa from cmdline.txt to 0 or 1, it does not make sense to have both declarations (=0 and then =1)

default value for this option is 1, so when you remove the string is equivalent of setting snd-bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=1

in your case, with snd-bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=0 you don’t have HDMI output in alsamixer, your HiFiberry shifts to card1 instead of card2 so you lose playback and HW mixer

could you please try to add snd_bcm2835.enable_hdmi=1 too?

snd_bcm2835.enable_headphones=1 snd_bcm2835.enable_hdmi=1 snd-bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=0

No sound with these settings:
