Luxman DA-250 DSD support

Hi.
I have DAC Luxman DA-250 connected to RaspberryPI with Volumio via USB. DAC type is detected automatically by Volumio and I see exactly DA-250 in output device configuration. PCM streaming works correctly. DAC shows bitrate and sample rate on embedded screen.

But DSD playback is not performed- tested on DSD64 and DSD128 sources. Special indicator lits instead -Digital signal unlock indicator/ In owners manual it means “the digital input signal from the digital device is not synchronized with this unit”. Also I found a version that this indicator means that DAC cant detect source type.

Besides - such files are played if DAC is connected to Windows PC from native Luxman player application (thу simplest one- with only one function- play a file).

I also tried DSD over PCM in Volumio with no result (DAC doesn’t support this mode).
For windows- a special driver exists, and if DAC is automatically detected in Volumio I guess- such driver exists in Volumio too.

Can anyone suggest- what could be the next step?

could you tell us which version of Volumio (please don’t say “latest”) you are using and please give us output from “lsusb”?
Also which PI?

Thanks gkkpch for a quick answer.

Volumio 2.909. RaspberryPI 3b+.

Here is the entire output of lsusb

There is no DSD support for device 1852:5066 in kernel 4.19.y, used with Volumio 2.
Kernel 5.4.y, used with Volumio 3, does not have it either.
Luxman should have this device registered in the USB audio driver, otherwise there will be no linux support.

Mmm.

Is there an option to do it somehow without Luxman? I don’t think they will. May be some workaround?

And the second question- how did you get this info- is there a regisrty of supported devices? I’m thinking about changing the DAC (Accuphase) and looking for option to check compatibility with Volumio before purchasing. I saw a registry of supported DACs in this forum, but there is no information on target model.

Unfortunately not, for RPi we take the kernel package straight from the Rap erry foundation, for X86 we take the kernel directly from kernel.org and only compile. The only thing that works is a simple modification of the quirk list in the audio driver, that is Luxman’s job to initiate, there is no workaround.

It is a hard-coded list in the audio driver sources, which is where I get my info from.
Ask in the forum before you buy, you need to supply the vendor and product ID (mmmm:nnnn) in cases where it is not obvious which make/model the targeted DAC is. The DACs are registered with these id’s.

Can I do it for myself? For sure it will be wiped out with every release, but I can return it back. Is it a compiled module or a configuration file?

P.S.
suppose we are talking about this method

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/f4d0cc426f77df6890aa868f96c2de89686aae8a/sound/usb/quirks.c#L1300

and I should add something like

case USB_ID(0x1852, 0x5066): /* Luxman */

and than recompile wherever this source is included. A tricky way, but will it help?

I’m also thinking about request to Luxman team, but I need to have correct explanation- what they have to do.

You would have to recompile the exact same kernel version as used for Volumio, grab the compiled
snd-usb-audio.ko module and copy it to Volumio.
But, you will probably loose OTA, meaning you can only flash a new Volumio version and with each update you need to check whether the kernel version in Volumio has changed and then do the same thing with the correct kernel sources again.
A lot of work…

You modification is not quite complete and not in the right place.
It has to be added to snd_usb_interface_dsd_format_quirks

You need to find out, whether DSD capability is on altset 2 or 3.
Do a cat /proc/asound/card5/stream0 to find that.
Then add your line to the correct place in the code.

I would advice against it, but it is not forbidden if you know what you are doing :))
Better have Luxman handle it.

I see this line

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/f4d0cc426f77df6890aa868f96c2de89686aae8a/sound/usb/quirks.c#L1849

And I see kernel patch- how it was introduced.

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/71426535f49fe6034d0e0db77608b91a0c1a022d

It describes another model (actually a successor of my DAC). and they differ in second field 0x5065 for DA-06 versus 0x5066 for DA-250.

Can you please check- is this one included to Volumio 2/3?

And another question- How could I enable automatic DSD resampling to PCM? Currently I see no such option for DSD playback mode.

No, there are no entries for DA-06 or DA-250.
I do not know where you found the patch for the DA-06, it never made the official kernel. As you now know how to check this, you will see by yourself.

Above is kernel 5.10.y, so not even in the latest longterm support version.
By now I think I gave you enough info, there is nothing else I can do to help

It’s in this line

https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/blob/ca2d815cbeb0af7be6efee12e62ef5ed19553348/sound/usb/quirks.c#L1563

You are right, DA-06 seems to have a specific interface and is handled differently. But this does not change anything:

  • we don’t know whether da-250 has the same interface
  • da-250 is not supported anyway

Again, this is where my support ends, please ask Luxman, there is nothing Volumio can do to change it.
Sorry.

Great thanks for your help , gkkpch. You really helped me a lot.
