Failed to open ALSA device "hw:2,0: No such file or directory

Volumio Version 2.853
Pi 4b, 4GB
Raspberry 7" Touchscreen
Raspberry original 5V Power Adapter
InnoMaker Raspberry Pi HIFI DAC HAT PCM5122 (recognized as ALLO BOSS)
http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/JW4S4NR.html

Everything worked like a charm since I installed remotePI (with the mod)
https://www.msldigital.com/pages/support-for-remotepi-board-plus-2015 (scroll down)
Even if can Start and shut down the raspi.

But if I want to play music I became the info "Failed to open ALSA device “hw:2,0: No such file or directory” - no sound, except through the headphone jack of the raspi.

I deinstalled the remotPi but the issue is persistent.

Hope you can help me!

sorry, searched for it, but don`t find it :wink:
thanks for your support!

Maybe this happens due to voltage problems?
As is wrote I use the original Raspberry USB C Power Supply.

The 7" screen shows no Voltage problem signal… but it still plays no music, even if I remove the screen.

So you did the hardware mod on the remotePi board in order to use GPIO 17 for its IR receiver?

Did you install the remotePi plugin and also set GPIO 17 on the configuration page of the remotePi plugin?

Are you referring to the remotePi board (hardware) or the remotePi plugin or both?

Please describe in detail how you connect the touchscreen.

Please post the content of your /boot/userconfig.txt, too.

This shows the reason why there is no sound:

[   13.315726] pinctrl-bcm2835 fe200000.gpio: pin gpio18 already requested by ir-receiver@12; cannot claim for fe203000.i2s
[   13.315743] pinctrl-bcm2835 fe200000.gpio: pin-18 (fe203000.i2s) status -22
[   13.315757] pinctrl-bcm2835 fe200000.gpio: could not request pin 18 (gpio18) from group gpio18  on device pinctrl-bcm2835

GPIO 18 is needed by the DAC but already occupied by an IR receiver. I suspect it is / was the IR receiver on the remotePi board which uses GPIO 18 by default. I suggest to double check if you did the hardware mod on the remotePi board to make it use GPIO 17 correctly and that the remotePi plugin was configured accordingly.

@gvolt Thank you for the help!

GPIO PIN settings now from PIN18 changed to PIN17.
I edited the wrong file… but wait and see, till I get the Raspi+Allo+RemotePI under voltage…
Touchscreen isn’t connected for first testing.

#### RemotePi lirc setting below: do not alter ####
dtoverlay=gpio-ir,gpio_pin=17

#### Touch Display rotation setting below: do not alter ####
display_lcd_rotate=2
display_hdmi_rotate=2```

Now it works perfectly.

At the next try I will connect the touch screen again. It is connected with the usual ribbon cable. It gets power (5V and ground) from the GPIO bar.

I am glad that it was so easy and that you could help me so fast! Thanks a lot!

That should work. Important is to not use the dedicated cables for SDA and SCL.

Unfortunately it doesn’t work together with the screen:

Failed to open ALSA device "softvolume": No such file or directory

Screen is only connected with 5V and ground.

Could you provide a new log with all devices connected?

Are you powering Pi, DAC and touchscreen by the remotePi board? If so, does the DAC work if you remove the remotePi board but have the display connected?

One think you could try with DAC, remotePi board and touchscreen installed: Set the output device to “Headphones” and save. After that set the output device back to “Allo BOSS” and save. Do reboots as requested. Check if “Mixer Type” is set to “Hardware” and “Mixer Control Name” is set to “Digital”.

New logfile with Pi4b+Allo Boss DAC+RemotePi+Touchscreen:
Failed to open ALSA device "softvolume"
http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/UheZW5v.html

Log still / again shows

Nov 29 10:52:11 volumio kernel: pinctrl-bcm2835 fe200000.gpio: pin gpio18 already requested by ir-receiver@12; cannot claim for fe203000.i2s

Nov 29 10:52:11 volumio kernel: pinctrl-bcm2835 fe200000.gpio: could not request pin 18 (gpio18) from group gpio18  on device pinctrl-bcm2835

Could you check that the configuration of the remotePi plugin is set to GPIO 17 and post or maybe PM me the current content of /boot/userconfig.txt and /boot/config.txt?

Sorry – was blocked for 6h due to many postings on my first day :wink:

I started new from scratch. Volumio latest version 2.853.
Complete hardware was assembled: RPi4b+DAC+RemotePI+Touchscreen

First start with RemotePi button succeeded. Then I installed RemotePi plugin first and activated GPIO pin 17. Restart. Everything worked.

Next step: install touchscreen plugin. turning display for 180 degree. Restart. it works! :hugs:

Here the final logfile: http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/47OecfF.html

@gvolt - Again big thanks!

Next challenge: checking out if my Logitech Harmony works with the RemotePi… but first I make a backup of the sd-card… any config ideas about harmony+remotePi+volumio?

Glad it works :smiley:

Yes, it’s sometimes the fastest way :wink: Has the advantage that you deal with a defined initial state, too.

Should work from the remotePi side (look for the section “Which infrared remotes work with the board?” and also here), i.e. powering on and off.

Regarding the IR controller plugin: I would try to find a remote control in the arsenal of the Logitech Harmony that is compatible to one of the profiles already offered by the plugin.
Edit: As powering on and off by IR remote control is handled by the remotePi board directly have a look at the lircd.conf file of the profile you want to use. If it should contain a key for the button which has been programmed into the remotePi board as power off button remove that key (e.g. the KEY_POWER key) from lircd.conf and / or remove the correspondent section from the lircrc of the chosen profile.
