If it were to be increased, what’s a safe value for the Audio Buffer setting based on the performance of the Raspberry Pi without causing issues?
As I play a lot of hi res and DSD audio I thought it might help.

You have to think in opposite terms.
Increasing the audio buffer actually taxes resources. Decreasing it frees memory and CPU paging. Try setting the buffer to 128kb and then keep buffer at 10% before play. MAKE SURE YOU RESTART. This is important. Cheers!
I use 8M w/o problem.
I see Volumio uses almost all the RAM (30M free). I supposed it is a linux thing as I dont hear any dropouts.
