I’m looking into DIY options for home studio monitors, and Tripath-based amplifiers are cheap and ubiquitous. Are they suitable for this purpose though?
In particular, I’m considering Carmody Hitmakers combined with one of these, or a couple of these amps from 41Hz.
I dabbled with them.
They can be a bit grey sounding on treble.
The smaller external 20V or so power supply ones didn’t turn out to be very reliable.
The bigger 60W ones with integral toroidal power, did good service.
I would say the sellers of the ones I bought over rated the power output claims somewhat.
Done well (not so cheap), I don’t see why they could not be pretty good.
