I’ve done similar, expect i completely removed the headunit.
Must say that the volumio in car is pretty amazing sound source, hard to beat the sound quality when choosing device to act as media source, easily beats the headunits i have owned and tablet as source device.
Pioneer P99RS do a great job on playing CD. Volumio doing the same stuff on playing files, online radio. That why I prefer dual unit setup
